Instill athletes with a bigger purpose

""To impart athletes with the vision of not only achieving a successful career, but transforming their success into living a life of significance"

AFTN's vision is to shift the focus of athletes of all ages and skill levels from being successful to being significant. Having success in life, whether it is in sports or any other field, pertains to us personally. But significance is always about other people. Every athlete works extremely hard to become the best athlete they can be, to become successful in their sport. AFTN will inspire athletes to use their on-field success to help change lives off of it, both here in the U.S. and around the world. AFTN will inspire athletes to become SIGNIFICANT. My vision of AFTN is to get every athlete to experience the same transformation I did; to transform their success on the field into living a life of significance off of it. I want all of us to get our eyes off our own accomplishments and have a personal vision of using the talents and blessings God has given us to impact the world.

John Dutton, Founder/Executive Director

I have been extremely blessed to be able to play football for over 30 years. Obviously, the game of football has been a vital part of my life. I have been through so much in my career. I have been able to throw many touchdowns, win a lot of games, win championships, I have had to go through major injuries, I have been cut, benched, and had to rebound from many losses. Sports has taught me discipline, toughness, resolve, respect, and perseverance. But even through all the years of playing, my greatest learning experience came in 2006, when my wife and I took our first trip to Africa. This trip opened my eyes to the world. A world of suffering and pain, a world that we do not see here in the US to that amount of degree. This trip opened my eyes to way most people in the word live. It made me appreciate, even more, the gift of playing football.

After the trip, my outlook on my career changed. I realized even more that I could use the platform that God had given me to help people around the world. I could use my success on the field to become significant in the lives of others. The next football season, I launched JD'S Touchdown Club. For every touchdown I threw that year, I was raising money to help change the lives of others around the world. My friends and family were pledging from $.50 to $2.00 for every touchdown I threw. My success on the field had just become significant off of it. Every touchdown I threw was not just helping my team win a game; it was also helping to save a life.

Athletes For The Nations was launched in 2011. After a serious injury, I was very discouraged because I thought that without me playing, JD’s Touchdown Club would not happen. But God had a different plan. He showed me that He still could use me even though I was not playing. So that year my focus was getting other athletes to use their success to become significant. Since then, AFTN has developed many ways athletes can help change the lives of people around the world.

AFTN has sports academies with elite level training on and off the field, an opportunity to sponsor athletes around the world, fundraising opportunities for athletes, businesses, churches, and other non-profits, and AFTN conducts vision trips for people to go and serve people around the world. AFTN also wants to support other athletes and their ministries around the world. Sports is a great way to reach those who are lost and suffering. By uniting athletes for His purpose, we can change the world, one child at a time.
